Happy Birthday to The American Legion!

15 Month Celebration

of 100 Years of Service!

The American Legion  will soon be celebrating 100 years of service to our country’s Veterans and youth. The Official National Celebration will begin at the 100th National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota from August 24 to 30, 2018. It will continue through the 101st Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana from August 23-29, 2019 and culminate with Veterans Day Activities in November.

Each Post is being encouraged by the National and Department leadership to plan local observances in honor of this historic occasion. There is a special commemoration section on the National website (www.legion.org) for individual Posts to tell about their Post history, show some pictures of Post activities, and to present their ideas for what the next 100 years of The American Legion will bring. I hope we have some members who would like to step up to make sure our history is recorded, who would like to do a first-class presentation to show off who we are and what we do for the Boyne area, and who would like to plan a vision of where the Post wants to be in 5, 10, 25 or 50 years.

The easy part of our history is this: 15 Veterans in Boyne City were named as Charter Members on the temporary Charter in July of 1920: Oris Chance, William De Fairchild, O. B. McCutcheon, L. R. Barnes, James Quick, James Dean, Lewis Tooley, R. F. Barden, Tracy LaCroix, Carl Agan, Max Harper, L. A. Simpkins, William Lanz, Worth Johnson, and Howard Middleton. In October, 1920 our permanent Charter was signed by the National and Department Commanders and respective adjutants. Both of these documents are hanging in the Legion Hall. It is the life of the Post since then, our "dash" as a community based Veterans organization which needs further documentation and promotion.

Are you a Motorcycle Rider?

Are you a Wartime Service Veteran*?

American Legion Riders Chapter 228

meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

at the Post Home, 302 S. Lake Street, Boyne City

The American Legion Riders is formed to promote the aims and purposes of The American Legion. As a family oriented motorcycling activity for members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary, and The Sons of The American Legion, the ALR strives to improve the public’s perception of the motorcycling community by promoting the honorable nature of military service and service to one’s community, state and nation through the sport of motorcycling.

The ALR is not a motorcycle club, but rather an association of like-minded Legion Family members who enjoy family activities and the opportunity to advance the aims and goals of The American Legion. As a very visible activity of The American Legion, Riders raise and donate funds to national, state and local programs and charities for veterans, military families, and local communities.
